Every September, an exciting announcement ripples through high schools across the country – the release of the National Merit Semifinalist list. And this month, thousands of hardworking students found out that they made the cut.
If your name (or your child’s name) is on that list – congratulations! Being named a National Merit Semifinalist is a huge honor. Out of the 1.3 million juniors who took the PSAT/NMSQT, only about 16,000 are recognized at this level – less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. That’s something to be proud of.
What does it mean to be a Semifinalist?
This recognition isn’t just a gold star for your résumé – it’s the first step toward becoming a National Merit Finalist and potentially earning valuable scholarships. Semifinalists are invited to complete an application with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) that includes:
- A strong academic record
- A recommendation from a school official
- An essay
- SAT or ACT scores that confirm their PSAT performance, which must be submitted to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
What comes next?
From here, about 15,000 students will advance to Finalist standing. In the spring of 2026, scholarship winners are chosen from three types of awards:
- National Merit $2,500 Scholarships: These are single, one-time scholarships awarded directly by NMSC.
- Corporate-sponsored scholarships: These awards (around 830) are often tied to a parent’s employer or industry.
- College-sponsored scholarships: Some universities offer full-tuition – or more – for National Merit Finalists! There are approximately 3,600 of these scholarships awarded.
Your Next Step: Finding the Right College
Your National Merit Semifinalist status is a powerful tool in your college application journey. Many universities across the country actively seek out National Merit Finalists and offer generous scholarship packages – some even covering full tuition, housing, and other expenses. These “full-ride” scholarships can be life-changing, and they’re a direct reward for your hard work and achievement.
To help you navigate this process, we’ve compiled a comprehensive list of colleges and universities that offer full-ride scholarships to National Merit Finalists. You can also search for colleges by state to discover the best opportunities in your region.
